Student Teaching Observations March 20th - April 28th (McCormick Jr. High)

Monday, March 20th I have been leading the 7th grade into classes through their GVC project for the district assessment. For this project, they were to create an abstract wiggle line for their artwork, section it into 8 segments and explore a new element in each one. I have been having a lot of fun with this project, and the students seem to enjoy it too. I used tootsie rolls for everyone to push around their paper with their pencil. This is what created our abstract wiggles. Once the students were done with that step, we moved on to fold our paper and work on the fist row of elements. I use video demos for these steps so it is brief for the students and simple to follow.  Wednesday, March 22nd I have been working on putting together a zentangle project for the current 2D 8th grade class for my early finisher students. This is a project I want to introduce into my 7th grade classes as well. I think by starting with a zentangle project, students can practice slow and controlle...

Monday, February 13th Now that the 1st grade bubble prints have dried, we could continue on with our second part of the lesson. I showed them another PowerPoint presentation on the microorganisms that live inside biofilm. I was worried about the heavy scientific content, but I broke my explanation down and the kids were able to grasp the general idea of what microorganisms are. We discussed what bio means, and we took out our pretend "microscopes" by using our hands to look at biofilm under a microscope. We talked about plankton, invertebrates, and other little critters that hide inside.  After the explanation, the students got to work, recreating microorganisms in their bubble prints. They used Sharpies and a cheat sheet to figure out which organisms they wanted to include. I created the original cheat sheet and copied them so each student would have a resource to look from. They were also encouraged to try drawing another microorganism they saw in the PowerPoint or YouTube...

Tuesday, January 3rd - WEEK 1 First day of school! Woohoo! I spent the majority of time working one-on-one with the students, getting to know their names, ability levels and interests. Afflerbach Elementary is a Title One school with a lot of students. Unfortunately, we only get to see each class once a week, but the kids were very sweet and I got a lot of pictures drawn for "Ms. Sylvania" today. Maybe I need to write my name on the board so the kids know it is "Ms. Sullivan". In the one below, I showed a student how to draw a dinosaur and they added laser-beam eyes, fiery wings and a city being attacked. It has already been stuck on my fridge. I helped third grade finish their Day of the Dead animal project. They created animal silhouettes on black construction paper and drew white bones on the inside with acrylic paint. They all got to chose their own animals and they turned out really cute!   Wednesday, January 4th - WEEK 1  I tried wearing a new outfit today. I ...
